Wanton Mee Again Some Say: Yi Shi Jia Wanton Mee

Took a week's break from writing about anything as i decided to have a dead brain week aka a main stream restaurant week.
I try not to write about main stream restaurants because firstly, I believe in promoting our local hawkers who have less main stream advertising exposure. Secondly, its boring to write about food more than half the population may have already tried and thirdly, its more interesting on my part to dig for hidden treasure rather than seek the path always followed.
However, if I eat something from a main stream restaurant worth writing about, don't shoot me.

In one of my posts, I wrote about my favourite wanton mee stall at Kampong Arang and swore it to be my favourite and its still my favourite, only less because I found another stall with wanton mee almost as good as it.
Located at the hawker centre in Kovan, Yi Shi Jia Wanton Mee was voted one of top ten wanton noodles in Singapore.

Texture and Taste:
The noodles, wanton and char siew (not fatty) was to my liking but I didn't enjoy the soup which was too bland. Great bite to the noodles and the sauce which i believe makes or breaks the dish, went well with everything.
Good portion and the queue moves pretty quickly.
Please do try when you happen to be in that area and feel like wanton mee.
Worth the wait.

Ayam Penyet 301: Pondok Pantai Timur

This has got to be the best ayam penyet I have tasted so far for sure. My husband kept raving about this ayam penyet for months before we finally found the time to go there together last week.

Ever since he got introduced to this ayam penyet by a business friend, he doesnt eat ayam penyet from anywhere else except from here because to him, no ayam penyet he has tried after this comes close to Pondok Pantai Timur's ayam penyet in taste and I think he could be right...this time. :)

This nice tasting non-greasy chicken rice with fragrant crispy skinned chicken and sweet, tangy home made chilli sauce will not disappoint.

And i must add that although the chicken is fried, the meat is not dry at all.

Originally from Changi Village, they are now in Ubi in a coffee shop called Ubi 301.

Fajar's Day Brunch at RedRing Wanton Mee

My dad loves wanton mee and would eat it everyday, 3x a day if he could so we brought him to Red Ring Wanton Mee at Holland Drive today for Father's day brunch.
I like the home made chilli sauce blend in the wanton mee which I heard took months to perfect.
I would say their wanton mee is a blend of pontian wanton mee and local old school wanton mee with super delicious charsiew.

I fully recommend their wanton mee.

Nice texture, bite and taste.
You may also choose the level of spiciness you'd like as well as portion of noodles you'd prefer.

An easy 4/5

Ka Pau Sunday: Liu Sar Pau @ Yi Dian Xin

We went for cheap dim sum today because I felt like having liu sar pau for breakfast.

I occasionally crave for liu sar pau and i am happy that there is a place where I can go to satisfy that craving because if you actually think about it, there are really not a lot of places you can find good liu sar pau in Singapore.

So when you, like i, want liu sar pau and just cannot think of a place that would sell you affordable but good liu sar pau, remember Yi Dian Xin Hong Kong Dim Sum along Upper Serangoon Road.

Their liu sar pau is super yummy. When you take your first bite into the bun, be careful because the filling literally explodes from the bun into your mouth with smooth, silky, savoury and yolky custard which will definitely tantalise your taste buds.

Cheap and delicious liu sar pau.

While you are there, do try their other dim sum dishes like char siew pau and carrot cake as well which I thought were pretty tasty.

3 Sisters Claypot Rice Feast

Touted as Singapore's best claypot rice by many, Lian He Ben Ji aka Three Sisters Claypot Rice, is sure to keep you coming back for more.
During peak hours, expect to wait 45 minutes and about 30 minutes during off peak hours.
Like all claypot rice should be, the rice is fluffy on top and crusty on the bottom. They are generous with the salted fish which I feel, is so a must in claypot rice. The chicken bits are smooth, soft and tasty and the chinese sausage they use is very fragrantly savoury.

Best claypot rice I have eaten in a long time. Superb.

Could improve on the chilli sauce.

Hair Straight Up Magic

I purchased a korean hair straightening cream from QOO10 a few days back for about $22.90 and used it tonight to straighten my naturally wavy hair and the results were pretty good.

A friend told me about Magic Straight Hair and strongly recommended it for its effectiveness. This stuff smells pretty funky (not pleasant) but it really works.
The cream comes in a big tube enough to do a whole head of long hair, and inside the box the tube comes in, you will also find 2 clips, a comb, plastic cape and gloves.

The first step is to spread the cream evenly through your hair and let it sit for 15 minutes.
The second step is to wash the cream off with water.
The third step is to dry the hair out with cool air.
And the fourth and final step is to iron your hair out straight with a straightening iron.
I used my Rowenta Wet Dry 230 to do this and it worked wonders.

Easy, cheap way to straighten wavy hair.

Super like.

Chicken It Up - Chicken Up

Didn't get to eat anything special or worth a mention over the weekend but I ate fried chicken on friday which was pretty darn fly for fried chicken.

When my colleague told me she ordered korean fried chicken for another colleague's farewell,  I thought it would be like KFC or BBQ Chicken but boy, was I wrong because this surpassed, in taste, the likes of Arnold's and Popeyes Chicken by aplenty.

The entire chicken was delivered to us in a white paper box and inside, together with the chicken sat a tub of mustard and a tub of chilli sauce which didnt make it very appetising but the moment I bit into a peice of chicken, I was sorry I ever thought that.

The chicken skin was crackling crispy and the meat was juicy and tender. The skin although crispy, was not sickeningly greasy and i must say the meat was savoury but not overly salty.

You can choose the level of spiciness you want. The one I ate was mild which didnt taste spicy at all.

Overall rating for this is 4.5/5
Hands down, one of the best fried chicken I have tasted.
